PROGRAM

FRANZ SCHUBERT - Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock), Op. 129, D. 965

Sarah Shafer, soprano; Anthony Costa, clarinet; Timothy Shafer, piano

ANDREY RUBSTOV -  Three Moods

  • Void
  • Sadness
  • Frivolity

Naomi Siedman, flute; Timothy Hurtz, oboe; Anthony Costa, clarinet; Lisa Bontrager, horn; Daryl Durran, bassoon

[The three movements outline three different approaches to the quintet as an ensemble. The first, "Void," consists of separate patches of sound, which seem to come from far away and are divided by long breaths. The second movement is "Sadness," in which the large-scale solos and dense instrumentation make reference to romantic compositions. The final movement "Frivolity" is a scherzo in the spirit of Piazzolla, in which each instrument expresses delight.]

SERGEI PROKOFIEV - 8 Pieces from Romeo and Juliet: for Viola and Piano (selected)

  • Dance of Knights
  • Death of Juliet
  • Mercutio
